With a fresh perspective, we decided to come back as a group and look at the big picture. One idea that stood out to us was the solar light idea that stood out to us previously. This was also the most systematic as compared to the other ideas since Kushagr’s father works very closely with a solar panel factory, and we could possibly contact him for primary research, or aid along the way. We decided to be cautious about finalizing ideas, because in retrospect, we have a habit of repeatedly changing our plans, so we decided it would be best to seek help before progressing.
We talked to Ms.Aprajita once again, who introduced us to a competition called “Global Social Leaders”. This gave us an ever stronger motive to complete and work even faster, since this is a global competition where we will compete against people from across the world. The introduction of this new aspect meant that we had to work even quicker.

After much thought and discussion, we realised that once again, we had done something we made the mistake of doing before: making our plan too ambitious. Although we continued to believe that working on this path would be the best idea, we decided to move back a few steps so we could ensure that our final idea remains one that can be beneficial, as well as achievable.
At this stage, it was quite hard to not get disheartened, although we knew that in the long run, changing our plan would be the most practical. We decided to move back to brainstorming, which, in my opinion is one of the best ways to group out everyone’s ideas and then integrate them into something that everyone wants to work with. We looked back at our previous planning documents and decided to move forward extremely carefully. Due to the fact that there were a few time constraints, we paused the process to continue with later. A few days ago, we crossed a major milestone for our process: we successfully connected with shakti, reply attached below:
Today, we discovered something that would help us take our project even further in terms of primary research.
Many of my friends in school have relatives and other friends that are extremely closely related to sustainable cities and clean energy. For example, both Vanshika Goel and Vrinda’s (friend’s) mothers are a part of ‘I segregate’ which is a group in my own society that has taken initiative towards working for a more sustainable future. They have done this by making bins that make composting and biodegrading much easier and much more efficient. Along with this, Tarsha’s godfather is also part of an official organization that works towards sustainable development, who we could possibly contact to help us in various other aspects of our SDG goals. To conclude, hopefully our next step would be to contact these people, and gather even more information to move further. The final NGO/Organization that we chose to contact and hopefully work with was the Shakti foundation, that works towards sustainable development along with a focus around clean and renewable energy. We started to draft a mail to propose a sort of “partnership” in which we provide our ideas to this organization.
Today, we discussed our final idea with Ms. Aprajita, where we gained some useful insight or an alternative final project; a business proposal.
This gave us a solution that would make us more personally involved with the actual solution, as well as providing a more impactful resolution towards the SDG goals. After this, what needed to be done was researching for a final sector to make a business proposal on, a device or program that would help move our chosen community towards our SDG goals, we brainstormed a few ideas, but later realized it would be much more organized to first look for our target audience, and then look for a product, to make sure both are adapted correctly. Today, we started with research on what exactly the problems are in the sectors that we chose, along with the various possible solutions. Obviously, under sustainable cities AND clean energy there are a vast number of possible solutions, which is why one of our first priorities was narrowing the problems down, so that we could evaluate them and brainstorm more specific solutions.
After this, to organize our research plan even more, we further segregated these 9 research areas into 3 for us each, so that research can be finished quicker and with more quality, which in the end is more efficient. To further develop our ideas for the solutions that we planned, we were given a venn diagram where both circles were labelled with each subject that we chose, in our case, Science and I&S. On both sides we noted down the possible research opportunities with each subject under both of the goals that we chose.
After putting down all of our ideas in one place, it made it much easier and much more efficient to decide what our final product was going to be, which is a major part of IDU, although the process is the primary part, and what we will be focusing on. After much conceptualization, we decided that we would do not only one, but two final products so that we can fully showcase the depths of our solutions. Our final two products was a mini-exhibition of prototypes of the different devices and solutions that we planned, which will accompany a blog that describes each of these prototypes along with some extra information about how and why we need to ensure that cities become and remain sustainable. After we were finished with the brainstorming, we turned back to our previous organizing doc to frame research questions that would guide us along our whole journey. We had the choice between sticking to both of our SDG goals or choosing only one to continue with.
After some discussion, my group and I decided that we would choose to work with both of our SDG goals, due to the fact that they are both closely related. To elaborate on our thought process, we had chosen the goals for clean energy (7), along with the goal for sustainable cities (11). Clean energy is a huge part of ensuring that cities are sustainable and to make cities sustainable, it is imperative that the energy is sustainable additionally, to ensure that even though the future, cities do not deteriorate and they continue to develop and modernize. The final research question that we chose to work under was “ Investigate and design ways in which we can use clean energy and other modern methods to ensure that cities remain sustainable and ensure that this is done in a safe and affordable way? “ Personally, I am eagerly looking forward to working with this question, since it has a vast range of possible solutions, which require brainstorming and research that will certainly be interesting to do. A few days before today, we received our groups along with the SDG goals and subjects we would be working with, and the subjects and goals were finalized, although the groups may be changed later, which was something to keep in mind. We brainstormed a few ideas related to our goals, a few issues along with solutions, which helped us to frame ideas, and then build upon them (brainstorm attached below). We also worked on our first step as a group, since we started to split and organize our topics. To help everybody have focused roles and purposes in the group, we split up roles (attached below), and this was done to help us later on so that each member of the group knows exactly what to do.
